Actress Sheena Chohan, celebrated for her independent journey and artistic integrity in Indian cinema, recently took center stage at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). Invited as a distinguished panelist for a masterclass on women’s narratives, Sheena delivered a compelling call for equality, urging the industry to prioritize respect both on and off the screen.
Speaking with remarkable candor, Sheena highlighted the profound link between on-screen representation and real-world safety. She noted that the objectification of women in film often normalizes harmful behaviors in society, stating:
“When women are discriminated against or objectified on screen, it normalizes behavior that places women in danger on the streets. We need stronger portrayals of women that can positively influence society, as what is shown on screen is often mirrored in everyday life.”

The Power of the Female Gaze
Sheena emphasized that the solution to India’s concerns regarding women’s safety lies in fostering deep-rooted respect through storytelling. She advocated for a shift toward the female gaze, calling for a continued increase in women writers, directors, cinematographers, and producers. “It’s already happening in a huge way,” she observed. “We just need to keep going—helping each other and believing in each other.”
